Now that I'm home again I have full access to my Dad's extensive collection of Studio Ghibli CDs. I've slowly but steadily been working my way through all the films, reaching for whatever film is speaking to me on that particular day. I watched some old favorites, and also some that I haven't seen before, but now love just as much as the ones I've seen a dozen times. Its got me feeling very aesthetically inspired, and from that inspiration came this blog post I present to you today.
Gina, Porco Rosso
Not very many ghibli characters wear makeup, and when they do its usually very big and colorful and worn by the villians. But Gina is refined and classy, and her makeup is beautiful, just like her. In the modern day, and in the real world where men aren't turned into talking pigs, Gina would be a total baddie. She would have a curated beautiful instagram and run a chic art gallery in New York. She would spend her days reading intellectual magazines and going to poetry readings at dimly lit, sketchy coffee shops that can only be accessed by walking down alley ways and tiny staircases. She would always wear her hair pulled back, and she'd live in chic leisurewear and heels. She would never download Tinder, and has a dozen DMs from men that she doesn't even care to look at. She's hopelessly in love with a man in flight school who is stationed far away, but they write letters to each other, and she always sprays hers with perfume. This is her makeup.
Senior Witch, Kiki's Delivery Service
I loved this witch's makeup, and her whole vibe really, so much that its really where the idea for this whole post came from. She's a little snooty, and she lives in a cute little city telling fortunes about love. In the real world, she would be a little snooty, live in Madison, Wisconsin, and tell fortunes about love. She would have a tiny shop with a studio apartment upstairs, and she would read tarot cards and do palm readings. Her shop would be modern and adorable with big open windows, light wood flooring, and plants and crystals everywhere. Her distinguished looking black cat would roam the shop freely. She would always wear floor length, tie dyed dresses that she makes herself, and she sells them on Etsy for some extra cash. In the summer on the weekends she has a little stand at the local renaissance fair, and she dresses up and tells fortunes. She sends out a weekly newsletter with horoscopes and advice for spiritual healing, and every week on her instagram stories she does a tarot reading for all the signs. This is her makeup.
I hope you guys enjoyed these looks, and my little modern take on the characters. I've gotten back into makeup since the quarantine started, there's just something so pleasing about putting on elaborate looks at 7pm only to go on a walk around the neighborhood and come back and watch a movie. Its all about taking pleasure in the little things. I hope this week finds you well, know that good things are just around the corner (like another month full of cool blog posts that we're both really excited about!) so keep your head up!
