This book was last featured in my Spring reading list...a whole season later and I finally got around to reading it! Sometimes life gets too busy to read a good book, but I'm glad that I found time this summer to get some done!
Today we will be talking about Little Lovely Things by Maureen Joyce Connolly. Check it out here
"It is the wrong time to get sick. Speeding down the highway on the way to work, her two little girls sleeping in the back seat, medical resident Claire Rawlings doesn't have time for the nausea overtaking her. But as the world tilts sideways, she pulls into a gas station, runs to the bathroom, and passes out. When she wakes up minutes later, her car―and her daughters―are gone." Read more..
This book is written from the perspectives of the characters, which I am usually not a fan of. But in this case, the different perspectives helped to develop the plot and give readers more insight about the inner workings of the characters. The characters had their own way of thinking and processing events, which contrasted a stark difference between them all. I didn't find any of them irritating, so that's a plus.
At the beginning this book moved really fast, and for obvious reasons. The fast paced parts were written very well and evoked emotions that helped to bring the story to life. Towards the middle of the book it started to slow down; however, it fit the natural flow of the story and helped to develop the characters and show their struggles. At the end, it definitely picked up and the story ended in a climax and left readers wanting more.
This book is definitely darker than I'm used to. (The book might have hit me so close to home because I have a sister) Overall, I would recommend this book if you're into some darker novels like The Woman in Cabin 10 or The Girl on the Train. The novel focuses on fate, the right timing, and the strength of family. This book gave me the chills, freaked me out, and made me tear up.
My first summer read is done! What other books should I read this summer? Let me know in the comments below!
