I had a vision before I came to school of me, sitting on a chair with a cup of lemonade, reading my school's newspapers. It was a funny image, since as we all know no one really reads the newspaper anymore, but as I passed the newspaper stand in our school's cafeteria, I grabbed one. Because why not? It was a funny thought, reading the newspaper, and it wouldn't really take a lot out of my day.
Now, I anxiously anticipate each publication of our school's newspaper. Its the thing I look forward to every other weekend. I love hearing about the events around town and on campus. I've learned so much about this community that I've dedicated so much time and money into being a part of. Newspaper articles have also become a steadfast conversation starter, because there's always at least one interesting thing in every publication.
If you're in college, I highly reccomend picking up a copy of your school's newspaper if they have one. It really opens your eyes to the place you've decided to be a part of. It makes me feel involved in this community, even if I may be removed from the direct action. I feel close to the people they write the articles about, and talking about the newspaper brings me closer to my friends as well.
The newspaper is also just a fun way to gain knowledge in general. I learned that in the city I currently reside in scientists have found mosquitoes that carry the west nile virus. I read a debate about putting armed guards in school. I read about a fundraiser for dogs that went on in the park. The newspaper shares community events that otherwise I would've never heard about, and writes articles on people I may never get to meet but through the newspaper got to share a moment in their life. It may be a dated form of media, but I see its value in bringing a community together and sharing a wealth of knowledge and information with all people. Its made me more aware of my surroundings and more empathetic to the fact that people all over have a life and story to share.
I challenge you all this week to pick up the newspaper and really read it. Get involved in the world around you.
