I feel like reading 1984 in school is like a right of passage, and not because it's an amazing book but because English teachers always hype it up. It's said to be the mother to all dystopian novels and other cool things like that. This year was my year, the year I got to read 1984.
And honestly, I was not a fan. The entire reason I hate this book is because of one person: Winston Smith. Hating a character wouldn't seem like a big deal but Winston is the main charter, and today I'm here to tell you why I hate him.
**ALSO: I'll try not to spoil it so this is going to mainly be talking about the early parts of the book**
HE THINKS HE'S BETTER THAN EVERYBODY
Winston is a self-righteous man, and hear me out. During Hate Week, Winston takes a long hard look at some of his co-workers and develops his own options on him. He resented his coworkers for being "too smart" and claimed that they would get vaporized; however, he resented his coworkers for being too compliant to Big Brother. And all while he was judging the others, he was doing the same things as most of them. But goly gee no, he's better than them all!!!
HE IS GROSS
Physically, mentally, honesty everything about him is gross. BUT EVERYONE ONE ELSE IS FAR GROSSER THAN HIM AND HE'S JUST THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN.
HIS THOUGHTS ABOUT JULIA
Talk about a problematic character and you get Winston Smith. Most of my hate for him comes from his "relationship" with Julia and their interactions. Hold on tight, this will most likely be a long one.
This all starts off when Winston first sees her and sees that she's wearing a red sash. (The red sash means she's apart of some anti-sex club) When he sees her sash, his hate grows and grows inside of him. He essentially hates her because he can't have sex with her, talk about a grimy pig. And as their "relationship" "evolves" he tells he how when he first saw her how he wanted to rape and murder her. What a sweet guy he is! Winston basically "fell in love" with the idea of Julia, and when she wasn't what he pictured her to be, he began to loath her. But instead of ending things with her, he continued "being in a relationship" with her just so he can have sex. Not even specifically have sex with her, just having sex with another human being.
HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH SEX
After seeing Julia wearing a red sash, Winston remembers a time he paid for sex and this story just further proves how gross he is. (Some backstory: Sex is "outlawed" in this society and is just for having kids. In the flashback, Winston is married to a girl who follows the law and doesn't have sex for pleasure.) Winston, angry at his wife for not putting out in their loveless marriage, goes out and finds an escort to have sex with. In the alley she is gorgeous, young and full of life but when they get into the room, Winston finds out she's old and not a young girl. He is immediately disgusted in her merely for being old and having sex, BUT he's doing the exact same thing as her. Not to mention, he's far grosser than she is described. Basically, Winston is a sex-driven pig who doesn't deserve anyone or anything.
Down with Winston Smith, not Big Brother. And no, I was not brainwashed by Big Brother to write this, I just really don't like him.
