I forced my parents to buy me a used vintage cruiser off of craiglist with the promise that I would ride it up in college. And now that I've been in college for three weeks I can say that I have fulfilled my promise, but only because my car broke down on Sunday, which was a super bummer, and now my only transportation method is my bike. So its a good thing I love my bike more than anything.
My bike is a gender fluid entity named Schwinn, and they're green and perfect and the gears are really old and get messed up sometimes but honestly my whole aesthetic is having old things that don't work very well and break inconveniently. But my bike takes me everywhere I need to go with minimal struggle, and I am thankful for it.
The town my college is in is nothing like I expected. Everyone that I ever talked to kept telling me that it was a 'cool little town', which I have now learned is the terminology adults use for towns that totally suck but have one cute little main street downtown that gets decorated for Christmas. The shopping center is about 2 miles away, and the bike ride is easy enough, but the stores are limited. The town isn't very big, and it doesn't seem to have moved past the industrial stage of development, so most of the town space is used for warehouses or junky strip malls. Don't even get me started on the Target, I don't wanna talk about how disappointed I am with that.
But I love my bike, and I love this new place, and I love my life, despite there being no 7-11s and nothing really to do. I'm having fun in my own way with my own group of people whose company I enjoy, and I can ride my bike wherever I want and save the planet with style. Buy a bike if you can, it'll make you appreciate things, plus its fun, and good for the environment.
