I was taking notes for history class when the idea got into my head that I wanted a betta fish. It was one of those strange desires that I just couldn't stop thinking about, and so I ditched my history homework and drove down to the pet store to buy this little crown tail betta.
It took three days to figure out a name for her. I just kept calling her all sorts of things, names ranging from Django, to Frida Kahlo, to Poppy. I finally settled on Cher since I had been calling her Chernobyl for about two days, and I will point out that not only was I pronouncing Chernobyl wrong but I also had no idea that Chernobyl was the site of a accidental nuclear explosion. I thought it was a Greek god or something. But I've always been fond of Cher, as in the singer and the character from Clueless, so the name appealed to me that way too.
She's a very energetic and friendly fish and always is up at the front of her tank to greet whoever passes by. She reminds me of a dog who's owner has just come home and they're so excited to see them that their tail is destroying everything in its path and they keep hopping from one foot to the other and its so cute and precious. Cher doesn't wag her tail of course, but she does dart around in zig zags up by the front of her tank and starts wiggling very aggressively which I'm going to assume means she's excited.
I've always had female bettas, Beethoven was my first male betta fish. I wanted to get another girl because I'm a sucker for underdogs and female bettas are greatly underestimated. Beethoven was very sick when I got Cher, and he had been sick for a couple of months previously. Around the time I got Cher he had been laying on his side on the bottom of his tank and could hardly swim and wasn't interested in eating. So sadly, he passed away about a week after I got Cher.
Cher has been a great addition to my ever increasing fish collection and I'm really looking forward to having her as a pet. Do any of you have betta fish or any other type of pet? We'd love to hear from you! In the meantime, be on the lookout for a betta care series we're planning on in the future, and keep checking back every Friday and Monday for new posts!
