Little Egg and I were obsessed with Sign of the Times when it was first released. We actually drove to a park to run around in the middle of the night listening to it because it was such a perfect song for dramatic teenage moments. So when the rest of Harry Styles' album was released, I was pretty excited to listen to it. Some songs were better than others, but overall its a solid album that is perfect for when you're driving around or need something calm and soothing to listen to.
Meet Me In the Hallway is a really good song to have playing when you've lit some candles, your bed is covered in rose petals, you're wearing a silky black bathrobe and your only plans for that night are to just lay there with the window open listening to Harry Styles and the sounds of the city.
Sign of the Times is again, the classic song for dramatic teenage moments. The lyrics honestly make no sense but when you're listening to them in the dead of night with the warm summer air blowing through your hair they seem to be the only things that could ever matter.
Carolina describes a woman that I'd really like to meet. Since most of the songs are about women, I'd say that the girl in this song is the coolest. I'd do my makeup to this song with the hope that some of her good energy would rub off on me.
Two Ghosts is hands down my favorite song on this album. Its a perfect song for when the person you thought you would love forever fades from your favor and they're no longer the light of your life. It really captures that sad moment when something that used to be so wonderful and perfect has faded into a sweet memory.
Sweet Creature is the perfect bohemian wedding song. A wedding where the guests sit on moss covered logs, the bride isn't wearing shoes, lace is draped everywhere, and the wedding arch is made of leafy branches and white flowers.
Only Angel describes a young boy who has just lost his virginity to a woman much older than him who wear really high leather boots and red lipstick. They will likely never meet again but this boy is of course obsessed with her, even though she doesn't seem to remember him or really care for him.
Kiwi is my least favorite song because I think the line 'I'm having your baby' is really stupid so I can't take the song seriously. I have nothing more to say.
Ever Since New York is the song that is playing in your car when you're driving away from the person you know for sure is your soulmate, but you need to move away to pursue your blossoming career as an artist in a land far away and they need to stay behind because their bed and breakfast is finally taking off and they don't have the heart to leave it behind.
Woman embodies a teenage boy's frustration at a girl leaving him for a man that is all around better than him in every conceivable way. Its the song he plays as he angrily drives around the outskirts of town in a black car with the windows rolled down. Eventually he will park his car, smack the steering wheel in defeat, and then drive home and move on.
From the Dining Table is the song that plays over the montage of a once bright and ambitious young person that slowly falls victim to severe alcoholism. Everything is filmed in black and white and the camera shots are very slow.
Overall the album has a very similar indie kind of vibe. It is honestly exactly what I expected from Harry Styles since he's always seemed like the kind of guy to make a solo album about his unrequited love and one night stands. But lyrics aside, the general sound of each song is very similar, soothing and hipsterish. I recommend that you take a listen, just to test the waters. It might surprise you.
