Today I have conjured up a list of songs that have accompanied me throughout my first semester of college. These songs are the staples that were played on repeat to the point where they are now a bit annoying, and have thus earned a spot on my 'Favorite Songs' playlist, which will be linked below and continuously updated as I encounter more songs throughout this first year of college.
Little Giant by Roo Panes
This was in the commercial for the movie Life Itself, which I really wanted to see but didn't have any friends in college that I felt I was close enough to go with. But I liked the song, so instead of watching the movie, I listened to it instead.
Lets Get Married by Bleachers and What a Feeling by One Direction
These were the two songs that got me out of bed on the rough mornings when I didn't want to. They energized me and made me smile, and I can clearly recall listening to Lets Get Married before I took a math test that I got a 100% on, so they've got lucky vibes too.
Kiss From a Rose by Seal
I fell in love with Emilia Fart over the course of my first semester at college, and she offhandedly mentioned this song in one of her videos and then I obsessively listened to it for the next month. Its a timeless classic.
The Night We Met by Lord Huron and Stars by Nina Simone
These were my crying songs, especially Stars. I would sit, at nighttime, wrapped up in a jacket, in front of one of the academic buildings by my dorm and just cry. Not about anything in particular really, just to cry. These songs always did the trick.
Take Me Away by Bleachers
This song reminds me of handsome strangers.
Youngblood by 5SOS
I had heard this intermittently on playlists and the radio, but it wasn't until I was coming home for fall break, driving in the mountains in the dead of night, that it came on the radio and I blasted it and shazamed it and finally got its title. It makes me want to get in a street brawl.
Super Far by LANY and It's All Been Done by Bare Naked Ladies
These songs both played on the radio at work and I literally dropped what I was doing to check the radio and see what they were called. They are the best thing to come out of my 2 month stint at the clothing store in the mall.
Those Were the Days by Mary Hopkin
My favorite radio station in my college town is an ad free 60s station that plays songs on an endless loop, and this one always comes on when I'm driving to my volunteer work on Thursdays. It feels like an old folk song and makes me want to wear a pioneer skirt.
Happier by Marshmellow ft. Bastille
This song, despite it having a sad theme, makes me so pumped and full of life and I just want to go out and dance and kiss people on the mouth whenever I hear it.
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season, and a merry Christmas if you celebrate it! This time of year can be rough, so if you're feeling the onset of seasonal depression take some vitamin D pills, bundle up and get outside, and call up some friends to relax and have fun. We'll see you in the new year!
