Having a job in high school is a pretty common thing but the discussion of balancing the two is never one that I hear much of. I've decided to share a couple of lessons that having a job, while in high school, has taught me. I had to learn these the hard ways in some cases but I think these lessons are some that will stick with me through life and maybe even help here and there in later years :)
How to balance your work life and social life
When I first started working as a seasonal employee I typically scheduled my social life around my work schedule as my job was suppose to only be a couple of months. However when I was hired as a part-time associate things changed. I learned that you should always make plans with your friends in advance so your life isn't always work and no play. With time I got more comfortable requesting days off so I could see my friends and not live at work. I never thought that balancing the two would be a challenge but it's important to remember that you're still a kid who needs to go out and have some fun.
You can't do it all
Sometimes after a long day of school followed by work, you can't get everything off of your checklist done. You shouldn't push yourself to do it all in one day, there is always tomorrow! In time you can master time management but even the experts can't be productive and get it all done. So what if you can't clean your room tonight? Or plan your outfit for tomorrow? Don't beat yourself up over the things you can't get done and understand that you're no superhuman like you'd like to think!
Manage your $$$
This lesson may be a boring one but it's an important one! I blew my first couple of paychecks on food, clothes, and other random stuff that I didn't need. I understand the feeling of having a nice looking bank account after pay day, but money management is something so important to learn! I put a little over half my paycheck away into savings and spend the rest on whatever my heart desires (in reason).
You're still a kid
As much as we'd all love to be adults and do it all on our own, we are still kids. Even at 17 I'm still a kid who goes to high school and happens to work a 20 hour week. Your high school job is a learning experience but don't get too caught up in it and forget you're a kid.
Those are just a few of the many lessons I've learned from working in high school in just 4 months! I am by no means an expert, I just wanted to share my experience and hopefully share some of my knowledge. Stay humble and work hard!
