I've had the urge to use my 5 week winter break to reinvent myself, take a breather, and get things back on track. Its not like my life has flown off the deep end this first semester of college (quite the opposite actually, I've had a very nice time), I just got so caught up in the thrill of everything being so new and exciting that I forgot to wash my face and stretch and write and paint and read. I want to use this break as a way to get back to my roots, to the hobbies and actions that I feel really uplift me and make me happy.
I'm going to write again, because while in college I finished the book I started this summer, and then took an extended break from. The last half needs to be edited and then it'll be all done and ready for publishing (maybe on Wattpad or maybe somewhere else??? I don't know, self publishing is a big difficult thing but I'm considering it). So I stirred up an idea for a new book and spent an hour in my school's library getting the plot worked out and I'm excited for it! Its dark and edgy and something totally different from anything I've ever written, which is a good, fun challenge.
I'm also going to do art again. My friends and I were talking and almost all of us were lamenting how little art we were doing in college. We had all been artists of some sort, whether it be doodling in a journal or painting, and we definitely felt the impact of not doing art. So I'm going to watercolor as much as possible and journal (hopefully) every day or so.
I also vowed to start walking once I get my new walking shoes at christmas, so until then you can catch me doing squats and crunches. I honestly hate excersize, but I can't deny that its good for you. Part of this break is about building a more positive routine, and I really want to try and get excersize incorporated into that so by the time I head back to campus it's part of what I do daily.
I think the holidays, and just winter in general, is the perfect time to reconnect with the things that matter to you. Its this time of year that everyone starts appreciating their friends and family more, so why not do the same with your hobbies? Now is the time, this is your sign. If there is something you love doing that you've been neglecting, make the time to do it. Not everyone is blessed with a 5 week vacation to accomplish everything they ever dreamed of, but we all have free time, whether it be the weekend, an hour every night, or the morning commute to work. Make the concious effort to do what you love. Read a book, write a story, paint a picture, play a sport, make music, whatever it is it is valid and very much worth your time.
