I started wearing makeup in the 7th grade, because the whole world was going through a beauty guru obsession and I, like everyone else, was totally on board. My mom bought me a makeup lesson from Sephora and a new pallet, and the rest is history.
I've gone through lots of phases with makeup. There would be periods of time when I'd go full glam every day followed by periods of going completely without makeup. I've always had acne so once I discovered concealer that was a daily staple for me. I don't think I ever used makeup as a 'mask' or whatever, it was just something I really enjoyed doing, because it made me stand out and it made me feel better about myself. But now the tables have turned.
I haven't genuinely worn makeup on a daily basis for years. I mentioned this in a monthly favorites a while back but here it is again because its just such a big deal and I have nothing else to blog about for this week. I don't wear makeup, and its the greatest thing ever, but also the most uneventful thing ever.
I'll bust the myth that not wearing makeup automatically makes your skin clearer. This is a fat lie. My skin looks no different just because I stopped wearing makeup. However, it does save you a lot of time in the morning, because no matter what the beauty gurus say, there is no such thing as a 5-minute makeup routine that will actually work.
I think above all, not wearing makeup has really changed the way I look at my natural skin. I've started using castor oil on my eyebrows and my eyelashes to help them grow so I don't have to wear mascara or fill in my brows. (The lash lifting kits I keep seeing on instagram are also very tempting, and if I can scrape up enough cash to get one I will let you guys know how it goes) It has also fueled my obsession with skin care. I do face masks, and use serums, and face mists, and I just ordered a vanity planet brush and it'll be here on Monday and I haven't been excited about getting something in the mail since I ordered the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack CD. Overall, rather than relying on makeup to give me a refreshed glow and long babydoll eyelashes I'm relying on advanced skin care and oils to give me a glow that genuinely can't be replicated by even the most expensive waterproof foundation.
The choice to wear or not wear makeup is entirely up to you. But its always a fun challenge to switch things up. If you're like me and you never wear makeup, consider going a week doing a full face every morning. (I'll do it too, and document it on our instagram which you should follow so you can keep up with my journey) If you're a glam girl, spend a week doing face masks and serums and misting your face with rosewater and calling it good. Or do an extra challenge and go a whole month! There's a whole other side to life out there, go an experience it!
