It was sophomore year in physics class, a stupid question asked more to piss off our teacher than to start something that would actually ruin our whole lives. We were learning about energy, and that stupid law of thermodynamics, and I was hitting the table asking over and over, "Where is the energy going? Where is the energy going?" And then it dawned on me that the energy my voice was making also had to go somewhere, and my friend Grace and I totally lost it and then one of us, I don't remember who, uttered the famous line, "What if gravity is just love?" And the rest was history.
It was a week of my life where I truly realized what the meaning of 'woke' is. I couldn't eat or sleep, I walked around in a daze, I was beside myself because everything was a lie, and nothing at all was real, and the aliens are watching us and everything has probably already been thought before by someone somewhere on this earth, and the only way to know the truth about humanity is to lock a person in a box and just see what happens, and then on top of all of that Buzzfeed unsolved was getting started and I stayed up every night watching 'Top 10 scariest disappearances' videos on YouTube which only further confirmed my crisis that the universe is a simulation. It was a lot. And when it finally ended, and we emerged from the other side of a complete and total existential crisis, the world seemed peaceful, and clear. And today, I am going to do my best to summarize the best theories that came out of this wild, wild journey that I took my sophomore year of high school.
1. Your thoughts are not your own
I'll explain before you get upset, because most people are easily triggered by this concept because we like to think we control our destiny. (Spoiler alert: We don't.) The thoughts we have about this world have been crafted and given to us by our environment. At least some of them. Most of them. Its hard to tell which ones are actually formed by our DNA and are a core part of who we are, and what thoughts we have just because we were born second, or because our Dad was a doctor or something. Which leads me to my second point.
2. Nothing is real
Everything is created and manipulated by forces beyond our control. The wind shapes our destiny, and money, and time, and space.
3. We are nothing
We are what the forces beyond us created us to be, and we are helpless in the face of such power.
4. Facts are fake
Because facts are based on things that can be controlled by people, and many of them are rooted in history that may just be a lie told to us by the supreme force that governs our universe.
5. Life is complicated
Because it isn't real, and we're hurtling through the void, and life is beautiful nonetheless, but it is also senseless, and this post is making me spiral out of control and fall into existentialism again.
