I've heard a few people talking about how with the start of July, they feel like summer is really here. It feels that way for me too, like June wasn't really summer yet. I love summer, I like the weather and the free time and the vacations. This summer has been amazing so far, but I haven't really done a lot of the things I set out to do. I'm a firm believer in a dynamic goal list, one that changes as your interests and abilities change, so I'm not too bummed that I'm not completing the bucket list I wrote back in May. But I am bummed that I feel like I haven't really soaked up the spirit of summer and completed more creative and personal projects. So the time is now! I'm shaking things up and am going to make the most of the month of July! Here are 5 things you can do if you feel like you need to kick start summer.
1. Watch a sunrise or a sunset
The weather app on your phone has the time the sun rises and sets each day, or a simple google search will tell you the exact time too. Drive around the city and scout out the best spot to watch. Preferably someplace high up, with an unblocked view of either the east or the west. Bring a book, a journal, or a friend, and enjoy the beautiful morning or evening colors.
2. Learn Something New
My biggest problem with summer, and this might come as a suprise, is the absurd amount of free time. I'm a person that thrives on a schedule, and so summer can be tough sometimes, especially if I'm sitting around on my phone all day. Fill your days up with something meaningful! Go to the library and read a book to learn more about a topic, or watch an online tutorial and follow along. Paint, sew, DIY a shelf, roller skate, dance, learn the butterfly stroke, anything!
3. Do an At-Home Retreat
I'm used to going on church retreats every year in the summer. Three days of waking up early, listening to speakers, journaling, and hanging out with peers. They were always the highlights of my summer, and something that I've come to miss now since I've graduated college. But you don't need a fancy venue and hundreds of people to have a retreat, you can do one right at home! These mini summer camps are a really fun way to bring back memories of your own summer retreats, and make some new ones! If you guys are interested in how to set these up, and maybe want a planning sheet of your own to print out, comment below! I can write up a post or send it out in a newsletter!
4. Put Away Your Phone
I mentioned above that I tend to sit on my phone more than usual during the summer because of all the free time I have. Doing this makes me feel drained and unmotivated, but as soon as the screen goes off, I've noticed that I'm instantly in a better mood. So take a day to silence your phone, or turn it off completely, and just exist. This can tie in with all the ideas too! Watch a sunset phone-free, learn a skill without your phone, or plan your retreat around not having your phone on you! Going tech-free is a great way to get back to the moment and enjoy a slower pace of life, which is what summer is all about.
5. Set New Goals
As I said above, I didn't achieve a lot during the month of June, but this July I'm ready to jump start my goal list and start achieving more. The start of a new month is a perfect time to reassess where you're at and what you want, and need to be doing now in terms of goals. Plus July, more than other months I feel, has that fresh feeling to it, its like summer has started over. So if you're bummed about not getting to do all the great things you set out to do this summer, let July be your second chance.
